Desensitizing and the Bosal

Each horse is different conformationally, his level of education and his temperament make him a unique individual. This is true of the rider and his character as well.

Seeming problems can often be alleviated by changing the hackamore/bosal to a slightly different spot on the nose and as it touches the fatty tissues of the sides of the face. Set it up specifically for what you are doing that day, but don’t be slow to change the position several times before dark by half an inch or so. This keeps the area from becoming irritated or insensitive to the impulses or signals you are using along with your body and/or voice for communication.

Tip: If you watch many veterinarians prepare to give your horse vaccinations or shots, you will not only see them clean the injection site, but also rub it a good deal. This sends an overload of sensation to the area and numbs it to a degree. Think about that in your horsemanship.
