Regular "runs" of limited edition prints are marked. Ex. 235/375. This is the only number 235 out of a run of 375. If there is more than one, then someone is cheating and the whole edition is suspect.

An artist is allowed a certain number of prints that he/she usually retains of each piece. These are done prior to the "run" numbers. The artist proofs generally are to be marked example AP 1/25. This would mean that there were 25 artist proofs and that this is the first. Some artists choose to not number their proofs. This is not common any longer since they generally charge more for them when they are released for sale. They were originally created for the artists to check the printing quality, but it has developed beyond that now.

Often the artist will remarque a picture with a hand original small picture in the border area (generally) which makes it the next best thing to an original. The remarque is a mini original without duplication.
